Born May 13, 1921 in Munich, Germany. Professor Ordinarius für Physikalische Chemie und Vorsteher des Physikalisch-Chemischen Institits der Universität Basel, 1968. Retired 1988.

Honorary Science Degree of the University of Durham. Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Marcel Benoist Preis, Swiss Confederation. Honorary Science Degree of the University of Fribourg. Heyrovsky Medal of the Cechoslowakian Academy of Science.

  • Molecular orbital theory of organic compounds and its application to ground-state and excited state properties of (mainly) non-alternant p-systems.
  • Organic photoelectron spectroscopy, theory and practice.
  • He was also one of the world's expert on chemistry on postal stamps and coauthored the book "A Philatelic Ramble through Chemistry " together with Foil A. Miller.
